    I duplicated the image 35 times (one layer for each puzzle shape)

    I began with a puzzle pattern. In Photoshop, I created a layer from each piece. I imported the layered image into Motion. I thought I could use each layer as an image mask, but image masks don't "stick" to the layer transformations! I used the Bezier tool to trace each puzzle piece as a shape. I dragged and dropped each shape onto one of the image layers. I transformed the anchor points of each layer to roughly the center point of the piece. Each layer was then keyframed individually: backwards! (i.e., from the finished puzzle to its beginning position. From the "end" keyframe, I moved backwards 10 frames (shift-left arrow) and keyframed a z-position of 200 pixels over the the finished plane [with adjustments to x and y to line it up a little better] then approximate 2-3 seconds before that point, I keyframed a much greater z using x and y to move the piece off the playing board, and adding x,y, and z rotations to the beginning animation point.
