Winners of the British Heart Foundation Reflections of Research competition 2010: Video category

Blood streams through both sides of a healthy human heart. Shown in slow motion and gradually rotated, the blood is coloured according to where it comes from. Blue shows the flow through the right side of the heart towards the lungs. Yellow and red show the flow of blood from the lungs to the body.

Produced using data from a non-invasive medical imaging technique called magnetic resonance velocity mapping, these experiments are part of a BHF project to develop computer simulations that improve our understanding of the way normal and abnormal hearts work.

"In the future, doctors may be able to use this and other types of imaging to help simulate the movements and flows of an individual patients heart, contributing to their clinical assessment and the choice of the most suitable treatment strategy. "
