Edifice, is defined as a building, especially a large or imposing one,
and also as a complex or elaborate institution or organization. This
piece of music, in my mind, is meant to depict a large imposing
fortress, perhaps in an ancient time and in an ancient place,
surrounded by the strong and tireless tribe which inhabits and defends
it.. The brass, supported by the percussion, intone an introductory
theme which represents the structure of the fortress itself. The main
theme (A) follows, played by various sections of the ensemble. "A"
represents this ancient, war-like culture, and their struggles and battles in defense of the fortress. After some variations on the theme, a more soaring and lyrical secondary theme appears (B). The ferocious "A" section returns, followed briefly by a romantic statement in the woodwinds. "A" returns one last time, in a more somber, less military presentation, before the piece finishes with a monolithic restatement of the introductory Edifice theme, and a fierce and frantic coda.
