  • Description: The front of Buckingham Palace was the canvas for a unique arts project celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Thursday (April 19).

    A giant image of Queen Elizabeth II was beamed onto the palace made up of a montage of 200,000 self-portraits by British schoolchildren.

    Children across the UK were asked to create a self-portrait in any form they wanted. Digital pictures were then taken of their creations and used to form the royal montage.

    The "Face Britain" project was created by Prince Charles' Foundation for Children and the Arts. Children aged between 4 and 16 years old took part.

    As well as the projection on to Buckingham Palace the images will be simultaneously screened for 24 hours on big screens in 18 public locations across the UK.

    At 2030 local time (1930gmt) on Friday April 20, organisers say a Guinness World Record will be broken for 'the most artists working on the same art installation'.

    The Queen celebrates 60 years on the throne in 2012.

    Celebrations will culminate in a Thames River Pageant on June 3 and an official service at St Paul's followed by a carriage ride through central London to Buckingham Palace on June 5. Millions are expected to line the route and throng the Mall to watch the Queen wave from the palace balcony.
