    On June 20, 2009 in the city of Tehran, Neda, along with her father, walked in protest down Karegar Avenue against the 2009 Iranian election. Among many other protesters, she was shot in the heart by the Basij, the non-uniformed militia controlled by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

    Neda was a 26 year old woman killed by the Basij during the 2009 Iranian election protests. Her death was captured on video by at least two bystanders. The graphic videos were broadcasted on the internet, quickly becoming a rallying cry for the pro-reform demonstration. Neda means "voice" in Farsi, and she was fittingly dubbed the "voice of Iran".
