Wolfe House Movers -
This house moving project video is Part 2 of the Hamilton Grange House Move.
This was the home of the famous founding father and Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Built in the 1802, the frame walls were filled with brick for insulation and stability which, when included with the four large fireplaces, brought the weight of the building to just over 300 ton. Wolfe House Movers started this move in May of 2008. The challenge of the job was the stone porch jutting out in front of the house from the neighboring church. This effectively blocked a normal move out the front of the property. With the back also not an option, Wolfe House Movers decided to go up and over the stone porch. The house was lifted 32' up into the air and then slowly slid over the porch and out over the street. The house was then jacked back down to just above the street, set onto hydraulic powered dollies and moved around the corner, down the hill and into St. Nicholas park about a city block away. The move went off without a hitch to the delight of the National Park Service, Wolfe House Movers and the surrounding crowd of New Yorkers and other people who showed up for the amazing show. The entire move took almost two months worth of work. Then the restoration began. The building will be opened as a National Museum sometime in 2010 if possible.
