Description: Our appetite for information about things that can affect our health seems to be unlimited. However, information about health hazards, and health benefits, is frequently distorted, leading to confusion on the part of the public about what is truly a hazard. In order to understand how evidence regarding health risks can be distorted, it is necessary 1) to critically evaluate the scientific evidence and 2) to take a broad view of the social context in which the findings of scientific studies are disseminated. This talk presents a framework for understanding the sociology of health hazards in everyday life.
