    Lesson 16: Learn Your First Guitar Chords (D)

    The D major chord is a very important chord to learn. This is because, like the C and G chords, you'll use the D chord all the time as a guitarist. What songs use the D chord? There's "American Woman" by The Guess Who, "One Way or Another" by Blondie, and "Everlong" by Foo Fighters, just to name a few.
    The most common way to play the D chord is in open position (pictured left). The D chord is comprised of the following notes in the key of D major: D (root), F# (3rd), A (5th).

    Step 1: Learn the shape of the chord - The D major chord in open position (meaning it's played at the base of the guitar neck) uses four strings and your first three fingers. Refer to the picture on the left. Study this picture and try to replicate this shape with your fingers before even playing the chord on guitar.

    Step 2: Apply this Shape to the Guitar - Now that you've practiced forming this shape with your fingers, apply the shape to the fretboard like this:

    * The 6th string isn't played
    * The 5th string isn't played
    * The 4th string is open
    * 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string
    * 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 2nd string
    * 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 1st string

    Step 3: Strum the Chord - Strum the chord out clearly. Adjust your fingers accordingly so that there are no muffled notes or buzzing sounds. Be sure to hit each finger on the frets at a right angle to get the cleanest sound out of the D chord.
