Con il termine Zen (禅) ci si riferisce a un insieme di scuole buddhiste giapponesi che derivano per dottrine e lignaggi dalle scuole cinesi del Buddhismo Chán a loro volta fondate, secondo la tradizione, dal leggendario monaco indiano Bodhidharma. Per questa ragione talvolta si definisce Zen anche la tradizione cinese Chán, ma anche le tradizioni Sòn coreana e Thiền vietnamita.
