Description: The project "protecting and improving the food and nutrition security of orphans and vulnerable children" was piloted in Lesotho and Malawi in collaboration with governments, WFP, UNICEF and NGOs. In Lesotho, the experience was piloted in the district of Mafeteng, an rural area affected by high rates of HIV/AIDS, poverty, malnutrition and harsh climatic conditions. Home and school gardening interventions were complemented with small livestock rearing, fruit tree growing, food processing (fuel saving stoves and solar-drying equipment), as well as with hygiene and nutrition education to increase their positive impact on the food and nutrition security of children, their families and communities.
