- Assembling an emergency kit and preparing a home emergency plan

- Clearing out your gutters, downpipes and drains to ensure they are in good order and not blocked

- Keeping your yard, porch and/or veranda clear of unsecured items such as children's toys which may become flying objects during a storm

- Trimming overhanging branches in your yard
